Empowering Women’s Legacy: Honoring Trailblazers at Tampa’s 27th Annual Women’s History Month Celebration

The City of Tampa is gearing up for its much-anticipated 27th Annual Women’s History Month Celebration, scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, 2024, starting promptly at 10:30 a.m. This year’s commemoration will take place at the iconic Tampa Bay History Center, nestled at 801 Water Street. And the best part? It’s an event that warmly welcomes all, completely free of charge.

As the city prepares to honor the incredible women who have shaped its landscape, Mayor Jane Castor will take center stage to present the prestigious 2024 Josephine Howard Stafford Memorial Award. This year, the deserving recipient of this esteemed accolade is none other than Ocea Wynn, the dedicated Administrator of Neighborhood and Community Affairs for the City of Tampa.

Ocea’s remarkable journey of service spans nearly two decades within the city’s administrative fold. Armed with a background in electrical engineering and holding a Master’s degree in Public Administration, she stands tall as a beacon of inspiration in fields where women have historically been underrepresented. Her trailblazing efforts have not only broken barriers but have also paved the way for countless others to follow.

Aligned perfectly with this year’s theme, “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion,” Ocea’s contributions stand as a testament to her unwavering commitment to fostering a more inclusive society. As the City of Tampa’s inaugural Chief Diversity Officer, she has tirelessly championed the cause of equity and empowerment throughout her illustrious career.

The Josephine Howard Stafford Memorial Award, a poignant symbol of excellence and dedication, was instituted to honor the remarkable achievements of female employees within the City of Tampa who exemplify outstanding commitment to their roles and community. Named in memory of Josephine Howard Stafford, a trailblazing figure in her own right, who served as an Assistant City Attorney for 24 years and was the first female judge in Hillsborough County. Ms. Stafford’s legacy continues to inspire, both professionally and within the broader community, as she dedicated her life to advancing women’s issues and breaking down barriers.

As the city comes together to celebrate the indomitable spirit of women like Ocea Wynn and to pay tribute to the remarkable legacy of Josephine Howard Stafford, it serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact that individuals can have in shaping a more equitable and inclusive society for all.
