Emma Stone was left stunned as she clinched her second Best Actress Oscar for her performance in “Poor Things.” The win came after a tight race against Lily Gladstone from “Killers of the Flower Moon,” with many pundits unable to predict the outcome. Had Gladstone won, she would have been the first Native American to secure a competitive Oscar.
When last year’s winner, Michelle Yeoh, announced Stone’s name, the actress appeared shocked. She shared hugs and kisses with her husband, Dave McCary, before embracing co-star Mark Ruffalo and director Yorgos Lanthimos in the aisle.
Backstage, Stone admitted to feeling a bit overwhelmed. “I think I blacked out,” she confessed. “Yes, I was very shocked. I still feel like I’m spinning a little bit.”
Stone expressed her gratitude for the team behind “Poor Things,” emphasizing that the success was a collective effort. She praised her co-workers and thanked Lanthimos for the opportunity to portray Bella Baxter, the character that earned her the award.
During her acceptance speech, Stone humorously pointed out that her dress had suffered a wardrobe malfunction, but repairs had been quickly made before she faced the media.
Reflecting on her journey, Stone acknowledged her earlier win for “La La Land” in 2017 and her multiple nominations over the years. She was also nominated this year for producing “Poor Things” but didn’t secure a win in that category.
The battle between Stone and Gladstone for the Best Actress title saw both actresses exchanging victories in various awards ceremonies leading up to the Oscars.
Stone’s career took off in 2010 with her breakout role in “Easy A.” Since then, she has graced the screen in several notable films, including “The Help,” multiple “Spider-Man” movies, “Birdman,” “The Battle of the Sexes,” and “The Favourite.”
Other nominees for Best Actress included Annette Bening for “Nyad,” Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall,” and Carey Mulligan for “Maestro.”
