Elon Musk, the CEO of social media platform X, recently announced plans to launch a TV app next week for Amazon and Samsung users. This app will allow users to watch long-form videos directly on their smart TVs.
Last October, X introduced an early version of video and audio calling for select users, with Musk expressing intentions to expand it into a comprehensive super app offering various services like messaging and peer-to-peer payments.
Responding to a user’s post speculating about the platform’s long-form video capabilities on smart TVs, Musk confirmed, “Coming soon.”
According to Reuters citing a Fortune report, the upcoming app may resemble Google’s YouTube TV app, with Musk aiming to compete directly with the video-sharing giant.
X has been actively forming partnerships with prominent figures like former Fox commentator Tucker Carlson and ex-CNN anchor Don Lemon, aiming to position itself as a ‘video-first platform.’
Since Elon Musk acquired X in 2022, the platform has faced challenges in retaining advertisers amidst various controversies.
In other news, Musk mentioned that X could soon secure approval for a money transmitter license in New York, with California approval expected within the next month. However, obtaining approval in New York might take a few more months.
Musk envisions transforming X into an “everything app” similar to Tencent’s WeChat in China, offering features beyond just social media, such as the ability to send money to other users.
To expand its services nationwide, X will require money transmitter licenses in each state, with Musk emphasizing the significance of obtaining licenses in populous states like New York and California. Some states, including Pennsylvania and Utah, have already granted licenses to X.
