Çanakkale Earthquake Activity and Fault Lines Overview

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan published by AFAD in 2021 contains details about Çanakkale, including various fault lines within the province such as Saroz-Gaziköy, Anafarta, Etili, Çan-Biga, Sarıköy, Yenice-Gönen, Akşam, Pazarköy, and Edremit.

On February 28, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 struck the Biga district of Çanakkale, according to data from AFAD’s Earthquake Department. Prof. Süha Özden, Head of the ÇOMÜ Geological Engineering Department, noted that more than 150 earthquakes ranging from magnitudes 2.0 to 3.0 occurred in the region over about a month. Özden highlighted the dispersed nature of these earthquake occurrences, stating that the recent earthquake’s epicenter was roughly in the middle of this disorganized pattern.

Özden emphasized that there are no active fault lines in the immediate region, as indicated by Turkey’s fault map. He clarified, “While the Çan-Biga fault lies to the south and the Karabiga fault to the north, there are no fault lines indicated on maps in this specific area.” Özden cautioned, “We must recognize that we inhabit an earthquake-prone region within Turkey’s geography. Earthquakes of up to magnitude 5 can potentially occur almost anywhere.”
