An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 struck 21 km southwest of Plužine, Montenegro, in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 4:06 am local time (Europe/Podgorica GMT +1). The quake had a very shallow depth of 7.6 km, causing it to be felt strongly over a large region, particularly near the epicenter.
Just five minutes later, another significant earthquake, registering a magnitude of 5.6, occurred 30 km northwest of Nikšić, Montenegro. This quake also had a shallow depth of 10 km, intensifying its impact.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported both seismic events, with the potential for revisions in magnitude, epicenter, and depth as more data becomes available.
Preliminary reports suggest that while the earthquakes were felt by many in the affected areas, significant damage beyond minor disruptions such as fallen objects and broken windows is not expected.
In Nikšić, Trebinje, Podgorica, and Mostar, the shaking would have been perceived as light, while weaker shaking might have been felt in Bijelo Polje and Sarajevo, further from the epicenters.
VolcanoDiscovery continues to monitor and update seismic data, encouraging those in the affected areas to share their experiences to enhance global understanding of these events.
