US rapper and activist Killer Mike was taken into custody and escorted out of the Grammy Awards by the Los Angeles police, as seen in a video shared by The Hollywood Reporter’s Chris Gardner on social media. The incident occurred on Sunday after Killer Mike, whose real name is Michael Santiago Render, had previously claimed three Grammy awards for hip hop.
According to a spokesperson from the Los Angeles Police Department, the hip-hop artist was arrested around 4 pm following an altercation inside the Crypto.com Arena, the venue for the awards show. At the 66th edition of the Grammys, Killer Mike and his collaborators secured wins in major categories, including Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance for “Scientists & Engineers,” and Best Rap Album for “Michael.”
These victories marked Killer Mike’s first Grammy wins since his recognition in 2003 for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for his contributions to the hip-hop duo OutKast’s “The Whole World.” Known for his outspoken views on social justice, particularly on issues like race relations and the treatment of Black individuals in the United States, Killer Mike has been a prominent figure in advocating for change.
In 2019, Killer Mike took on the role of host for the Netflix documentary series titled “Trigger Warning with Killer Mike,” exploring a range of issues that significantly impact the Black community.
