On Wednesday, the renowned philanthropist and co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, paid a visit to the Maa Mangla Basti in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Gates had arrived in the Odisha capital the previous night.
During his visit, scheduled for Wednesday, Gates was set to participate in various programs, with a particular focus on the utilization of artificial intelligence for the benefit of farmers.
Among his agenda, Gates was slated to meet with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and participate in events associated with initiatives like the ‘Jaga Mission’ (aimed at the development of slums), the ‘Mukta’ scheme (which provides localized employment opportunities for urban poor), and ‘Mission Shakti’.
Officials highlighted the collaboration between the Odisha government’s Department of Agriculture and Farmer Empowerment and the Fisheries and Animal Resource Department with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation since 2017, particularly emphasizing innovation in data-driven decision-making.
In a recent blog post on February 25, Gates expressed his anticipation for visiting a low-income community in Odisha where a government program is empowering women with skills to undertake government construction contracts. He lauded the program’s impact, mentioning its contribution to over 52,000 projects including the construction of roads, drains, and toilets, benefiting around 22,000 groups of women since 2018.
Gates also expressed his admiration for India’s innovative spirit, particularly highlighting the digital public infrastructure (DPI). During his trip, he looked forward to witnessing DPI in action, mentioning a visit to an agricultural monitoring center in Odisha. This center, leveraging Aadhaar, maintains a registry of 7.5 million farmers and their crops, aiding officials in providing real-time guidance. Additionally, Gates mentioned the development of a chatbot that utilizes AI to deliver tailored information to farmers in their local language.
In his recent blog, Bill Gates emphasized India’s remarkable gift to the world: its innate ability to innovate. He highlighted India’s rich history of groundbreaking contributions, citing the introduction of the decimal system for numbers by ancient mathematicians. Moreover, Gates acknowledged India’s contemporary advancements, particularly in healthcare, which have positively impacted millions of lives both domestically and globally.
During his upcoming visit to India, Gates is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He disclosed that their primary agenda will revolve around exploring avenues for the continued collaboration between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and India. Gates expressed a keen interest in understanding how the foundation can further support India’s innovative ideas and inventions, ensuring their widespread accessibility and benefit for all, regardless of geographical location.
