BCCI penalized Rishabh Pant and the entire Delhi Capitals (DC) team following their repeated slow over-rate violations in IPL 2024. This breach occurred during Match 16 against Kolkata Knight Riders in Vizag.
“Rishabh Pant, the captain of Delhi Capitals, has been fined for his team’s slow over-rate during their IPL 2024 match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam on April 3,” stated BCCI in an official announcement.
Pant received a ₹24 lakh fine for this violation, while other members of the DC XI, including the Impact Player Abishek Porel, faced fines of ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever was lower.
“This marks the team’s second over-rate offense of the season under IPL’s Code of Conduct for minimum over-rate violations. Consequently, Pant was fined INR 24 lakhs. Other members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were individually fined either INR 6 lakhs or 25 percent of their respective match fees, depending on which penalty was lesser.”
DC had previously faced a similar slow over-rate issue in their last match against Chennai Super Kings at the same venue, resulting in Pant receiving a ₹12 lakh fine. Individual players of DC were also fined in that instance.
Sunil Narine exhibited his batting prowess by smashing 85 runs, while teenager Angkrish Raghuvanshi impressed with a fluent half-century of 54 runs off 27 balls on his IPL batting debut for KKR. Their efforts helped KKR post an imposing total of 272/7, just five runs shy of the highest total in IPL history.
However, the Capitals struggled throughout the match, failing to keep up with both the ball and the bat. They faltered under the pressure of the massive target set by KKR.
Despite skipper Rishabh Pant scoring his second consecutive half-century with 55 runs and Tristan Stubbs also contributing with fifty of 54 runs, their efforts were in vain as DC collapsed for 166 runs in 17.2 overs, marking their third loss of the season.
This defeat marked DC’s third loss in four matches, leaving them at the No.9 spot in the IPL 2024 points table with one of the poorest net run rates.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Pant admitted, “Our bowlers struggled to find their rhythm today. It was just one of those days where we didn’t perform as a team.”
He further added, “As a batting unit, our intention was to keep pushing aggressively as a team. I’d rather see us all out as a team while chasing the target than hold back.”
