Employees at the West 82nd Street Barnes & Noble store in NYC have taken a significant step by filing for a union election with the NLRB, aiming to be represented by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). This move follows similar successful union votes across Barnes & Noble Inc. and Barnes & Noble Education locations nationwide. If successful, these workers will join two other unionized stores in NYC, highlighting a trend of union wins in the area, including at independent bookstores like McNally Jackson and Greenlight Bookstore.
The decision to file for the election came after a majority of workers signed RWDSU authorization cards and shared this with management, urging voluntary recognition of the union to expedite contract negotiations. However, with no response from Barnes & Noble, workers officially filed their election petition with the NLRB. Despite overwhelming support for union representation, the company has yet to voluntarily recognize the union at any store.
Concerns among workers include job security, lack of job structure, and perceived favoritism by management. Lauren Champlin, a bookseller at the Upper West Side store, emphasized the importance of raising workplace standards, reflecting a broader national labor movement. Eve Greenlow, another bookseller, stressed the need for fair treatment, consistent hours, and agency over working conditions for herself and her colleagues.
The proposed bargaining units encompass approximately 50 NLRA-eligible workers at the 82nd Street store, including booksellers, baristas, cashiers, maintenance staff, and non-supervisory employees. It’s important to note the distinction between Barnes & Noble and Barnes & Noble Education, as they are separate entities.
Unless Barnes & Noble voluntarily recognizes the union, the NLRB could schedule the election as early as next month if an agreement is not reached swiftly between the parties.
