Akash Deep made an immediate impact for India, claiming three crucial wickets in the opening session to put England on the back foot.
His breakthrough came early as he sent Duckett back to the pavilion for just 11 runs in the 10th over, with the left-handed batsman managing only one boundary off 21 deliveries. Ollie Pope stepped in as Duckett’s replacement but found himself dismissed by Deep for a duck after facing just two balls.
Deep’s impressive debut continued as he removed Crawley in the 12th over for 42 runs, curtailing the English opener’s aggressive innings which included six boundaries and a maximum from 42 deliveries.
Meanwhile, India’s spinners also made their presence felt, with Ravichandran Ashwin reaching a milestone by claiming his 100th Test wicket against England when he dismissed Bairstow for 38 runs in the 22nd over. Bairstow’s brief stay at the crease saw him strike four fours and a six.
The session concluded with Ravindra Jadeja getting in on the action by dismissing English captain Ben Stokes for just 3 runs off 6 balls in the 25th over.
At the end of the first session, India had picked up five wickets, restricting England to 112 runs on the scoreboard.
