Anne Hathaway Opens Up About Five Years of Sobriety and Embracing Self-Acceptance

Anne Hathaway has celebrated more than five years of sobriety, a commitment she made while raising her young sons. Reflecting on this achievement, she emphasized its significance over arbitrary milestones like birthdays.

In a recent podcast interview with The New York Times, Hathaway, known for her roles in “The Princess Diaries” and “The Devil Wears Prada,” opened up about reaching the five-year mark of sobriety, considering it a personal milestone. She also shared her perspective on middle age, acknowledging the uncertainty of life’s trajectory and preferring not to categorize herself within such terms.

Turning 41 last November, Hathaway reflected on her career journey, including the challenges she faced, such as the criticism she endured after winning an Oscar for “Les Misérables.” She emphasized a shift in mindset from taking life for granted to embracing gratitude and letting go of self-imposed stress.

Hathaway admitted to struggling with self-criticism and feeling disconnected from her body in her youth. While she didn’t delve into specifics, she hinted at a pivotal moment that led her to prioritize self-acceptance and gratitude.

In a previous interview on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in January 2019, Hathaway revealed her decision to quit drinking, citing her desire to be fully present for her son in the mornings. She clarified that it wasn’t a problem with alcohol itself but rather the resulting hangovers that prompted her to make this change.

In a recent Vanity Fair profile, she discussed undergoing a profound personal transformation over the past five years, which coincided with her sobriety journey. Hathaway expressed a newfound sense of self-awareness and contentment, emphasizing her detachment from external judgments and her ability to embrace laughter more readily.
