Detroit Red Wings Call Up Jonatan Berggren Amidst Forward Shortage

The Detroit Red Wings are turning to Jonatan Berggren to bolster their lineup amidst a forward shortage. With a trade deadline departure and Dylan Larkin’s injury leaving them short-handed, the Wings are tapping into their organizational depth by summoning Berggren for their upcoming clash against the Golden Knights in Las Vegas.

Following Friday’s 4-0 loss to the Arizona Coyotes, coach Derek Lalonde expressed hope for a spark in the team’s performance. The departure of Klim Kostin earlier in the day, coupled with Larkin’s lower-body injury, has left the Wings one forward short of their usual lineup.

Berggren, 23, has already made nine appearances for the Wings this season, tallying two goals and three assists. Despite an impressive rookie campaign last season with 15 goals and 13 assists in 67 games, Berggren began this season with the Grand Rapids Griffins to refine his defensive skills. His efforts in the AHL have been fruitful, amassing 46 points in 43 games with an even rating.

With Larkin sidelined until at least mid-March, Berggren is poised for an extended opportunity to make his mark. This call-up marks his fifth of the season, and he only needs four more NHL games to lose his waiver-exempt status, likely securing a permanent role with the Wings.
