Félix Bingui, the leader of the “Yoda” clan, was apprehended in Casablanca, Morocco, on Friday at 7 p.m., as reported by a source close to the matter to Franceinfo on Saturday. Bingui heads one of Marseille’s most influential criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking, known for its rivalry with another group called “DZ Mafia.”
French authorities had issued an arrest warrant for Félix Bingui in the summer of 2023. Moroccan authorities, in collaboration with the National Fugitive Search Brigade, successfully located and apprehended him. He is expected to be extradited promptly, as stated by a source familiar with the case.
French Minister commented, “Today marks a significant blow against drug trafficking, thanks to our cooperation with Moroccan authorities, to whom I extend my gratitude.”
Marseille Gang Feud Sparks Wave of Violence in 2023
Last year, the prosecutor revealed in December that approximately 70% of homicides or attempted homicides by organized gangs in Marseille were attributed to the feud between the “DZ Mafia” and “Yoda” clans, with a particularly intense period in August. This rivalry was underscored by the assassination of Félix Bingui’s brother-in-law and another member of the Yoda clan in Salou, Spain, in May 2023, leading to the indictment of nine individuals in early January.
In 2023, the police headquarters reported 49 deaths in Bouches-du-Rhône related to drug trafficking.
