Eagles icon Jason Kelce has reached a pivotal decision regarding his future in football and is set to make the announcement this afternoon.
At the age of 36, Kelce will address the media at the Eagles’ NovaCare Complex at 1 p.m. on Monday, with the press conference airing live on NBC Sports Philadelphia. Following the conclusion of several recent seasons, the veteran center has mulled over the prospect of retirement, and this could be the moment he bids farewell to the NFL. Although reports emerged post-Eagles’ playoff exit suggesting Kelce’s retirement plans, an official confirmation is yet to be made.
Despite celebrating his 36th birthday during the 2023 season, Kelce maintained an exceptional level of performance, earning accolades as an All-Pro and Pro Bowler. If not the premier center in the league, he undoubtedly remains among the elite.
Throughout his illustrious 13-year NFL career, Kelce has amassed an impressive resume, claiming first-team All-Pro honors six times and Pro Bowl nods on seven occasions. Remarkably, he has secured a spot on either the All-Pro roster or the Pro Bowl team in each of his last eight seasons, solidifying his status as a Hall-of-Famer.
Should Kelce opt for retirement, the Eagles potentially have his successor in Cam Jurgens, drafted in the second round from Nebraska last year. While Jurgens saw limited action in his rookie year, he assumed the role of the Eagles’ starting right guard in 2023. Kelce himself played a pivotal role in scouting Jurgens and endorsed the selection, indicating his willingness to contribute to finding his eventual replacement.
The Eagles will maintain continuity on the left side of their offensive line with Jordan Mailata and Landon Dickerson, and Lane Johnson will return as the right tackle in 2024. Additionally, there’s a possibility that Tyler Steen, a third-round pick in 2023, could step into the starting right guard position should Jurgens transition to center.
Regardless of Kelce’s decision, the Eagles will have time to navigate the ensuing changes. Today’s press conference serves as an opportunity for the city to express gratitude to a true legend of the game.
