Observing George Washington and Daisy Gatson Bates: A Day of Reflection and Recognition

On Monday, we observe the President George Washington National Holiday and the Daisy Gatson Bates State Holiday. This means that all city, county, state, and federal offices will be closed for the day. Additionally, there will be no regular postal delivery, and banks and other financial institutions will also be closed.

However, WCA will continue its usual Monday garbage collection route in Columbia County. It’s worth noting that Magnolia Public Schools, Columbia Christian School, and Southern Arkansas University will remain open.

While most retail businesses will be open as usual, it’s important to remember the significance of this day. George Washington, the first president of the United States, is honored on this day, officially recognized as George Washington’s Birthday. It’s worth clarifying that some may mistakenly refer to it as “Presidents’ Day.”

On Monday, February 20, 2023, the State of Arkansas will officially recognize George Washington’s Birthday and Daisy Gatson Bates Day as state holidays.

Daisy Gatson Bates, a native of Huttig, holds a significant place in history as an African-American newspaper publisher who played a pivotal role in guiding students through the racial integration of Little Rock’s Central High School in 1957
