Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene erupted in response to criticism of her party’s alignment with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Former British Prime Minister David Cameron likened Putin’s appeasers to those who appeased Adolf Hitler before World War II, emphasizing the need to support Ukraine against Russian aggression.
In an op-ed for The Hill, Cameron urged continued support for Ukraine and warned against the catastrophic consequences of appeasement. Greene, confronted by a Sky News reporter about being labeled an “appeaser for Putin,” dismissed the comparison as rude and told Cameron to worry about his own country, adding, “Frankly, he can kiss my ass.”
However, Cameron’s concerns about Russia’s expansion and the historical parallels between appeasing Hitler and tolerating Putin are valid. The GOP’s “America First” approach, reminiscent of the isolationist movement of the 1930s and ’40s, neglects U.S. obligations to allies and emboldens authoritarian regimes like Putin’s.
Greene’s outburst may grab attention, but it detracts from the real issue: the threat posed by Putin’s authoritarian ambitions. Republicans like Greene seem willing to turn a blind eye to Putin’s aggression, prioritizing isolationism over global stability and security.
